Cultural Factors Influencing Mental Health Stigma: Perceptions of Mental Illness (POMI) in Pakistani Emerging Adults

Pakistan has a fast-growing, young, and highly religious population. Mental health literacy care in do not meet the population’s needs, mental stigma (MHS) is cited as cause. Explanations for MHS across cultures include collectivism, sociocultural-religious/spiritual beliefs values surrounding illness those who experience it. interventions campaigns that aim to improve help-seeking behaviors require insight into emic perspectives of each target Although these have been elusive Pakistanis, they are more available today due growing interest studying improving Pakistani health. This cross-sectional study 92 emerging adults explored whether collectivism was associated with stigmatizing attitudes toward illness. also piloted Perceptions Illness (POMI) questionnaire, 44-item true/false survey customized context, assess how knowledge, perceptions, exposure, preferences related attitudes. Results indicated POMI provided unique insights relate both collectivism. With further development, may be used guide design awareness programs Pakistan, ultimately helping reduce increase help seeking when needed.
